Rivers of Babylon - Boney M

I really like this disco version of "Rivers of Babylon" by Boney M. The lyrics come from Psalm 137. The psalm is a lament of the Jewish people in exile following the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 586 BC.

The reggae version, originally written by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of The Melodians, is a truncated version of the Biblical hymn which depicts the Jewish longing for Jerusalem and hatred for its enemies. Africans, relegated to Jamaica by the slave trade, identified with the pain of captivity and made the song their own.
